The main use of sildenafil is to treat erectile dysfunction, which is the inability to maintain an adequate erection long enough to finish sexual activity. Today, it is the accepted standard of care for diabetes-related erectile dysfunction in all situations.[2]Sexual dysfunction may occur in antidepressant users as a side effect of the medication or the disease itself. According to a 2003 study, sildenafil enhanced male sexual function in this circumstance.[3] The same researchers discovered that sildenafil enhanced sexual performance in female patients using antidepressants, supporting reports from 1999[4].[5]
Pulmonary Hypertension
As well as erectile dysfunction, sildenafil citrate is also effective in the rare disease pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). It relaxes the arterial wall, leading to decreased pulmonary arterial resistance and pressure. This, in turn, reduces the workload of the right ventricle of the heart and improves symptoms of right-sided heart failure. Because PDE-5 is primarily distributed within the arterial wall smooth muscle of the lungs and penis, sildenafil acts selectively in both these areas without inducing vasodilation in other areas of the body. Pfizer submitted an additional registration for sildenafil to the FDA, and sildenafil was approved for this indication in June 2005. The preparation is named Revatio, to avoid confusion with Viagra, and the 20-milligram tablets are white and round.
Altitude Sickness
The prevention and treatment of high-altitude pulmonary edoema linked to altitude sickness, such as that experienced by mountain climbers, has been demonstrated to benefit from sildenafil.[7][8] Sildenafil is quickly becoming a recognised treatment for this disease, especially in cases where the normal treatment of rapid descent has been postponed for some reason, despite the fact that its effect has only recently been recognised.[9]
Dosage
Viagra
The term “Pfizer” and “VGR xx” (where xx stands for “25,” “50,” or “100,” the dose of that pill in milligrammes) are engraved on the outside of each blue, diamond-shaped Viagra pill. It should be taken once daily, between 30 minutes and 4 hours before sexual activity.
Three times daily doses of Revatio are recommended for treating pulmonary arterial hypertension. White, spherical, film-coated Revatio pills have “RVT 20” stamped on one side of them.[10]
