What Is Anti Anxiety?

As the name suggests, anti anxiety means something that opposes anxiety. It basically refers to the medications that are available to overcome bouts of anxiety in the affected individuals.

Anxiety is an emotion, just like happiness, sadness or any other feeling we may have. However, anxiety is very much tied to our body physiologically; hence you are likely to experience sweaty palms, a rapid heartbeat, palpitations, light headedness, dizziness, and/or shortness of breath when you have an anxiety attack. These physical symptoms result from the thinking negative thoughts repetitively and lead to the development of bad feelings.

Anti anxiety medications include the benzodiazepines and related drugs which have significantly replaced the barbiturates because they are safer and more effective anxiolytics. Our treatment range for anxiety include four medications belonging to the benzodiazepines and one related drug. The benzodiazepine medications include Ativan (lorazepam), Klonopin (clonazepam), Valium (diazepam), and Xanax (alprazolam). The other related medication is Busron (BuspironeHCl).

How Should Anti Anxiety Pills Be Taken?

The first and foremost thing to take into consideration regarding the taking of anti anxiety pills is this that they should never be taken without the recommendation of your psychiatrist and/or pharmacist as these drugs have the tendency to develop an addiction potential. They should be reserved for continued severe anxiety and then should be used for short periods of time.

How Do Anti Anxiety Pills Work?

Benzodiazepines are the majority anxiolytics, which work by enhancing the GABAergic transmission in neurons in the CNS, thereby inhibiting the neuronal circuits in the brain leading to a reduction in anxiety. GABA is the major inhibitory chemical of the brain, the transmission of which is raised by the benzodiazepines. The individual medications differ slightly in their anxiolytic properties, but show considerable difference in their duration of actions. Valium has the longest duration of action i.e. one to three days. Both Xanax and Ativan have effects that last for ten to twenty hours. Klonopin shows effects for six to twelve hours.

Busron, which contains buspirone, is related to the benzodiazepines in terms of efficacy but mediates its effects by acting on 5-HT1Aserotonin receptors.

These medications bring a rapid relief in anxiety and panic attacks ranging from within thirty to sixty minutes.

Success Rate Of Anti Anxiety.

The success rate of treating anxiety with the anti anxiety pills is high provided they are used in low doses and over short periods of time. Also, behavioral therapies, indulging in physical activities, supportive environment provided by friends and family is very necessary in making an individual cope up with anxiety

Anti-Anxiety Drug Dependence And Withdrawal.

The anti anxiety medications have a great tendency to precipitate psychological and physical dependence, tolerance and withdrawal symptoms within the individual if used over prolong periods of time and in high doses. Therefore it is very necessary to use them cautiously. Abrupt discontinuation of the benzodiazepines results in withdrawal symptoms like confusion, anxiety, agitation, restlessness, insomnia and tension. Therefore, when you need to get off the anti anxiety therapy, gradually taper off the dose to prevent the occurrence of rebound anxiety attacks. The beneficial features of buspirone is that it does not cause addition or tolerance.
